Did you know you can play your feet like a drum? It’s true!

In this term, children of all ages will learn the basics of Sean-nós dance and dive deep into the Polka rhythm through games, call-and-response instruction, and improvisation. This fun, low-pressure dance class is a great introduction to Irish music, dance, and cultural heritage for kids and their families. And best of all, it’s right in your own home! All you need is a screen with an internet connection, some hard-soled shoes, and a little space to dance.

Sean-nós (“old style”) dance is a form of improvisational solo percussive dance from Ireland. Unlike modern step-dancing with its high-flying leaps and rigid arms, Sean-nós is close to the ground, rhythmic, and more relaxed. Sean-nós dancers aren’t just dancers, but musicians as well. Our instrument is our feet!

Join us for weekly Zoom dance classes for children ages 3-12 (for children under 6, we request that an adult sit in; teens are encouraged to join the adult beginners class) and get ready to move your body!

Shuffle, shuffle, heel, toe tap!

About the instructors:

Dylan Wilde

Dylan Wilde grew up in a musical family in Northern California, spending her summers immersed in the Appalachian folk singing and dancing of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Dylan has spent the past three years studying Sean-nós and old-style Irish step dancing under the direction of Maldon Meehan, and can often be found practicing her steps in the grocery store checkout line. When she’s not dancing, Dylan spends her days teaching and caring for young children. Formerly an assistant teacher at Cedarwood Waldorf School and Montessori of Alameda, Dylan is currently an infant and toddler teacher at Songbird Playschool in SE Portland.

Maldon Meehan

Maldon Meehan grew up in an artistic family in Portland, Oregon and Mendocino, California. Maldon holds a true passion for teaching and performing Irish dance. In her early years as a nanny and preschool teacher Maldon always strived to incorporate dance into her time with children. One summer she devised an all boys summer dance camp! Maldon began teaching kids more formally through Portland Parks and Recreation in 1999. In Portland Public School, she taught as a specialist instructor at Buckman Elementary, Jackson Middle School and Winterhaven as well as other after school programs. Céilí, set and sean-nós dance are all part of the repertoire she shares with children of all ages.
